Are Halo Combat Evolved servers still up?
Fans are paying tribute to Halo as its Xbox 360 servers have just been shut down for good. As a new age of Halo flies in with Infinite, we’re seeing the end of the old. Microsoft announced back in 2021 that the servers for Halo 3, Halo 4, Halo Reach, Halo Wars, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, and Halo 3: ODST were all going to be shut down.
- The date was delayed several times, but the deed has been done – multiplayer Halo on Xbox 360 is no more.
- As confirmed by the Halo support Twitter, January 13 marked the final day of Halo on the Xbox 360.
- The Twitter account said, “Online services for legacy Halo Xbox 360 titles have been discontinued.
The affected games will remain playable indefinitely, but some experiences will be impacted”. In response to the closure, Halo fans have been sharing memories and tributes on social media. The Twitter post announcing that the closure had happened is full of comments showing support, including one video that shows Halo 3’s servers when 1088008 players were online.
In a surprisingly throat-tightening comparison, another fan shared a video showing a population of 0 as the servers were shut down. You can see that the server map has gone completely dark where it used to show lights representing player density. The Halo subreddit is also full of tributes, including one video that thanks all the community for the memories and clips shared over the years.

Another memorable video shows one lucky player recording the exact moment that Halo Reach’s servers shut down, showing their Spartan looking for one last battle and being unable to. I’m not crying, you are. For those who are suddenly crumbling to dust and missing the old age of Halo, don’t worry too much as all the legacy games are available to play through the Master Chief Collection and show no sign of being shut down any time soon.

What is the easiest Halo game?
Which legendary campaign is the easiest? i’ve already beat h3, odst, and reach on legendary, but i’ve been holding off on ce, 2, and 4. in my opinion, reach’s campaign was the easiest to beat on legendary. which campaign has been the easiest for you to beat on legendary? and a quick follow up question, which campaign should i beat next on legendary? ce, 2, or 4? 1 Like Out of the 6 games, I would have to say Halo 3’s was the easiest mainly because most enemies are either one-hit kills or can be easily dispatched with the noob combo.
As for your follow up question, I would have to say Halo: Combat Evolved mainly because of the Grunt Funeral skull.4 Likes Pinata + Boom is good spam in CE and 2, but boom is also a double edged sword.2 Likes i have always been worried about using this skull combo, especially for when i’m going for achievements.
i guess if i use it right and use the skulls safely, it could really help. thanks for the suggestion! halo 3 was really easy. almost felt a walk in the park. emphasis on almost 2 Likes H2 was by the far the most difficult because of how unbalanced it was (the game was rushed and the devs did not had time to polish the game), I would recommend to do it next so you dont have to do it later.
I would then recommend to do Halo 4 before CE because the enemies were so poorly designed in it that you will often face a lot of challenge with bullet sponge enemies and very annoying support that revive them. You can then round up your legendary playthrough with CE as the only unfair enemies you will run into during some of the missions are the rocket floods 3 Likes To me ODST had the easiest legendary campaign.
Piece of cake, relatively speaking. And H2 is the hardest by far.4 Likes I’ve been able to do 95% of Halo 4 in one sitting. It definitely has its frustrating moments though. But my personal easiest is definitely Halo 3: ODST as you can cheese your way through most of it.2 Likes huh, for me Reach’s legendary is one of the hardest campaigns.
It took me like 1 week to complete it. For me, the easiest legendary would be Halo 4, and not very far, Halo 3. Halo 4 for me was just a shoot and run game, you can pass through zones without even trying to kill enemies, you just need to be lucky and be fast. Halo 3 was not like that, Legendary feels like enemies are more accurate but not more stronger.
Now, your second question. Well, it depends. What would you eat first? A rock (ce), a cactus (2) or a butter candy (4)? Ce is rough, it’s very frustrating sometimes and since is a 20 YO game, expect a lot of “sh1-t-ty” old school mechanics or glitches.2 is hell.
That’s everything i have to say.4, already told you. My advice? start with 2, then CE, finally 4. Eat the cactus, take out the spines with the rock and finally remove the taste of blood and dirt with a sweet butter candy.3 Likes thanks for the advice. the consensus seems to go hardest to easiest (that being 2, ce, than 4) so i’ll probably do that 1 Like Halo 3 felt like a walk in the park, even when you know how to speed run as well 1 Like I honestly don’t think CE’s Legendary campaign is all that bad.
You can get through most areas of the first half of the game (pre-Flood) with the Plasma Pistol, that weapon is stupid strong in CE. The only time you ever need to charge it up is against Gold Elites as their shields are pretty strong, but firing it rapidly will still take down Grunts, Jackals, and rip right through the shields of Elites.
- The only time you won’t really be using the Plasma Pistol is when you have the Sniper in Truth and Reconciliation and when you can pick off a few distant enemies with the Pistol.
- The Shotgun, borderline a WMD in CE, will more or less carry you through the second half of the game, that weapon can drop a Spec-Ops Elite with two point-blank blasts on Legendary.
The Rocket Floods aren’t that bad if you know where their locations are and you can easily flush them out with a grenade. The funny thing is with Halo 3 Legendary is that I think speedrunning the levels on Legendary is easier than playing them as you normally would, The Storm and Tsavo Highway come to mind here.1 Like Well, in ODST there’s a glitch that lets you skip entire missions (except for the last one), so if you don’t care about doing it the “right” way I would say ODST.
Although, the final mission is unskippable and it’s probably the most frustrating one in the series to solo IMO.1 Like i didn’t know there was a glitch to skip whole missions. what’s the glitch? Alt-F4 on the post-game carnage screen after Rookie found the clue, when you continue it will play the cutscene of him throwing it away and the mission will be “completed”.

Which Halo has the best story?
1. Halo 2 – Image: Bungie via Halopedia Halo 2 is the definitive Halo game. It not only cements Master Chief as one of the biggest video game badasses ever, it also gives players the chance to play as the Arbiter and get an inside look into the Covenant. This creates the strongest story the Halo series has seen so far.
It turns the Covenant into a living and breathing militarized cult, rather than some goofy aliens getting dropped off into arenas. Halo 2 also adds some of the series’ biggest features like hijacking and duel wielding, giving dimension to play without distracting from any of the action. The iconic Battle Rifle makes its debut here, along with many new weapons.
And it’s one of the debut Xbox Live multiplayer games. Halo 2 is still a near-perfect example of how to increase the scale of your sequel. Everything is bigger and better than the original, but it still felt like Halo.

Is Halo: Combat Evolved a horror game?
I love a good power fantasy as much as the next person. And if you think I wasn’t fist-pumping the first time I saw Master Chief boogie-boarding an antimatter bomb through space and into a Covenant cruiser, you would be incorrect. But power fantasies are a dime a dozen.
The most memorable Halo moments are the ones that made me feel vulnerable. The Halo series is at its best when it veers into outright horror. Consider the game that started it all. In Halo: Combat Evolved, Chief is a stranger in a strange land, not only looking for a way off the titular ring world, but also trying to figure out what exactly the ring world is.
“343 Guilty Spark,” the sixth mission, leads the Chief to a derelict facility in the bowels of a remote swamp. After passing through hallways littered with mangled bodies — human and Covenant alike — Chief watches footage from a discarded helmet cam in which a squad of Marines is torn apart by a wave of tentacled, parasitic creatures.
- The footage ends, and Chief realizes he’s in the same room where the carnage unfolded.
- He hears something slithering toward him.
- Thus, he meets the Flood: “the only enemy the Covenant fear.” Halo ‘s Flood-centric chapters are not necessarily the most fun ones.
- Whittling down the hierarchy of a Covenant squad, for example, demands far more strategy and encourages the use of the full array of weapons in the game.
But then my motion sensor is awash with Flood signatures, and the soundtrack escalates into a frenzied orchestral shriek. It doesn’t matter that I’m 7 feet tall, 1,000 pounds, and enveloped in an energy shield — in those moments, Combat Evolved is absolutely terrifying.
None of this is to say that the Covenant can’t be scary as well. They’re an intergalactic conglomerate of religious zealots that either train for war from childhood, or enslave whole worlds to make them fight against their will. The universe is being engulfed by a violent crusade that threatens to all but eliminate the human race.
What’s more, a world-eating network of starving parasites just joined the fray. Also, that ring is actually a life-erasing weapon. And there are six more of them. The Halo series gets a lot of storytelling fuel out of the horrors of this whole situation, even though Master Chief is rarely fazed by it all. Image: Bungie/Microsoft Game Studios Then there’s Halo 3: ODST, which isn’t about Master Chief. After all, it was created in large part to get away from the superhero stories of Chief and the Arbiter in favor of a well-trained but far more vulnerable spec-ops squad.
- The Helljumpers’ increased fragility, coupled with the game’s nighttime setting in a city under siege, makes for more tense, deliberate pacing overall.
- That said, it leans into noir far more than horror, even when I want it to commit to the latter.
- It’s a veritable hard-boiled detective story, complete with jazz, rain, and the lone gumshoe looking for answers.
Halo: Reach, on the other hand, is laced with horror story trappings. Its first mission, “Winter Contingency,” paints the Covenant as a vicious, insidious force. They speak in squawks and guttural barks. They leave mutilated interrogation witnesses lying in pools of blood.
A group of Elite Zealots ambushes you in a shadowy relay station, comes within inches of killing you, then drags a Marine corporal as a meat shield into a darkened room, where his helpless screams echo before fading completely. That desperate tone remains throughout the campaign. Reach is a prequel to Combat Evolved, and entering its world means accepting that (almost) every Spartan soldier on planet Reach will die.
To paraphrase how my co-worker Nicole Clark described it in a recent Zoom call, Halo: Reach is basically Rogue One, in that it’s about marching toward a foregone conclusion — in this case, the destruction of humanity’s greatest fortress — and clinging to hope regardless. Image: Bungie/Xbox Game Studios Reach is full of haunting moments and tense challenges that take a while to shake off. My favorite mission, “Exodus,” tasks you with evacuating civilians from the city of Alexandria, all while a battle group of Brutes combs through the alleyways and courtyards in search of survivors.
In another sequence, from the side turret of a Falcon, you’re forced to watch as the city burns, UNSC forces get swallowed up, and civilian transports are shot out of the sky. The music is mournful here, but the scene is nothing short of grim. It’s yet another reminder of the unknown horrors that lie in wait for humanity and anyone fighting to preserve it.
It grants the rest of the franchise even greater narrative weight. Developer 343 Industries has largely moved away from overt horror elements in the entries following Halo: Reach. And while I’ve enjoyed much of my time with the studio’s sequels, they’re lacking that sense of terror that drew me to the series in 2001, the first time Chief turned on Jenkins’ helmet cam in that sinister swamp in a remote corner of a mysterious world.
